Why call the river "Ticino" if the Canton is "Tessin"?

- @BrennodAloisi:, this article was written back in 2008 by a user who was not a native Romansh speaker (in fact had a very limited grasp of Romansh), and has never been proof-read by a fluent Romansh speaker. @Terfili: Dictionaries say "Tessin" also[1], with tessinais -a as the adjective[2]. Is it safe to then rename this "Tessin (flum)" and use the "Tessin" page to redirect to here and to Chantun Tessin? See Moesa. BrennodAloisi (talk) 03:42, 23 favrer 2021 (CET)

- Actually when you search the web for mentions of this river in Romansh, either "Tessin" or "Ticino" is used (but both are rare). I assume that this river just isn't know and talked about enough in Romansh-speaking areas, so some people keep the Italian name, others use "Tessin" (which really is just borrowed from German anyway). --Terfili (talk) 15:35, 23 favrer 2021 (CET)
- @Terfili: I don't think it is just a German borrowing. Arpitan uses Tèssin; Lombard uses Tisin or Tesin; and Piedmontese uses Tesin. With loss of the -o like in the others, it makes sense for Romansh to come up with Tessin or similar. Plus that same Pleadri Grond dictionary has a historical name for Lugano, definitely not recently loaned from German or Italian: Ligiaun. BrennodAloisi (talk) 00:30, 24 favrer 2021 (CET)
